   I’m renovating the yard to create a food forest but the previous owners placed three or four layers of landscaping fabric and plastic tarps over solidly compacted clay and then covered with about two inches of mulch, so the soil was dead (not a single organism!) and brick-like in quality. I removed the layers of plastic, did a free chip dump to add 4-6 inches of mulch on top for about two weeks (to concentrate moisture in the soil) and then went in with the broad fork. This fork loosens the soil for at least 6-8 inches and allows me to easily shovel out the rest to create mulch trenches and raised planting areas. It’s easy to use and I’m a 5’6” woman with severe Ehlers Danlos syndrome and an injured back, but the weight of the fork is sufficient to work the tongs into the clay without much physical labor on my part. I was worried reading the reviews but it’s not hard to lug around the yard and I’m so pleased with how much easier this is. For reference, I tried to use a mattock to break the soil with little success (and more physical labor than I’m allotted) and I could only get a shovel into the clay maybe two inches deep, so this thing is well worth the price and my favorite tool as I look at the rest of this quarter acre of compacted clay soil lol, this is going to make my life much easier.

   I have Hard Clay + Black Prairie soil, Worked lovely. Even successfully busted a water pipe with this tool, uhh oops. Make sure to line up the red and the black before stabbing in the ground.The heaviest part of the tool is the Red, it weighs at least 10 Lbs. I notice a lot of review complain about the weight, which is why I weighed it to let Future Buyers have a better idea.Not really sure how to improve the awkwardness of using the red tool, I barely even used the “foot hold” the red had. I guess maybe use springs or something, but that may just end up hurting you.If you are a beginner with a small area and don’t wanna spend the money for a REAL Broadfork, I say buy this. IF you have the Money and a bigger desire to keep going. probably gonna advise getting the more expensive true farmer Broadfork. Never had one, Never used one. But it def gives more depending vibes.As for the of this tool, I’m of an Average height… Soooo I didn’t have to modify the height too much. BUT if you’re a shorter stature, I can def see how this IS An amazing setup.

   This thing is really heavy duty. Feels extremely solid and worked extremely well to break up my hard clay soil. It was very easy to assemble and use in my garden. The only thing that some people might not like is that it’s pretty heavy, but that’s also a pro because it helps with getting it deeper into the earth.
